Soldiers were forced to evacuate due to flooding at the military base in Malam Fatori, Borno state.

34 out of 36 states in Nigeria are currently witnessing the worst flooding in decades.

Malam Fatori, which shares a border with the Niger Republic and Lake Chad, is located in the Abdama LGA adjacent to the Komadougou Yobe river.

The majority of the town’s areas are reportedly inaccessible because of the flood, according to Zagazola Makama, a publication that specialises in the Lake Chad region.

According to the publication, “the troops in the town are known for their remarkable bravery in resisting repeated attacks from Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters who are using a variety of weapons including improvised explosive devices, mortars, rocket-propelled grenades, and gun trucks.”

As a result of the flood, hundreds of local inhabitants, particularly internally displaced people (IDPs), are reportedly struggling to obtain food, clothing, and shelter, with many relocating to unsanitary open spaces.

The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reported a few weeks ago that flooding in 14 LGAs in the state had caused the displacement of over 16,000 people.
